Character's personality:
Katniss is a survivor, she grew up in District Twelve an impoverished mining district. After her father died, she became the head of the family, she hunted outside of the boarders, and traded it for supplies to keep her family, alive. She also risked everything, by putting her name in to the Hunger Games multiple times in return for food. In early life, and in the games, this determination, to survive, to keep going has kept her going, even in the darkest moments when she feels like there is little left to live for.

Perhaps, more important, than that need to survive, is her love for those who she loves. Katniss will do anything for them, from volunteering for Prim in the Games, to trying to win for and Rue. They are her strength. She fights to protect them, she fights for them. She even gets involved in the rebellion to fight for a better world for her, them and to honour the dead despite her hatred for politics.

Despite the strength of her emotions, Katniss is terrible at expressing them, or admitting them to herself. Katniss, has learned that to survive, that she must lock down on her emotions and not to trust people because that makes her weak, she can’t afford to think of them if she wants to survive. The best case in point is her relationship with Peeta. She pushes her feelings away, denying them, getting angry at him for caring for her. Until she realises that she might actually lose him.

Katniss is not the strongest person mentally. After two arenas where she has been forced to kill, she suffers from PTSD. She wakes from nightmares. She has waking flashbacks, and shuts down when she isn’t able to deal, hiding away from people. However, when the chips are down, she pulls herself to fight, to protect other people.

She will always stay true to herself, Coin and Haymitch have tried to mould her into the person they needed, and she always refuses, she will do things on her terms and for her beliefs.


Character's skills/abilities/powers: Katniss is a hunter, she is very skilled with a bow and arrow, she also has strong survival skills like building fires.

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Katniss has been through a lot in her world, I want to see what would happen to her when she is transported into a different setting, and given time to reflect on what has happened to her.

Writing Sample #1:
The smell of smoke is thick in Katniss’ nose, and it feels like the whole of Panem is burning around her. ’If we burn, you burn with us.’ Her very words are coming back to haunt her. People’s screams ring in her ear. Fire, isn’t a good way to die. It’s slow, painful, and she can hear them all begging her to end their misery. Kato, Rue, Prim, she can’t get to any of them, she can’t even see him in the fog.

The only clear thing she can see in the distance, is the Presidential Palace, lit up in all it’s awful glory. It mocks her. For all that she has done, she’s done nothing but bring misery and pain to those around her, to innocent people. Peeta’s screams cut through to her left, and she whizzes looking for him. What she finds is a mutt with his face. Blood dripping from his jaws. Her blood she realises is she brings her hand up towards her face.

She wakes from her dream, pressing a hand to her mouth to silence the scream. Her wide eyes stare unseeingly for a second. Her chest rises rapidly and falls. Her mantra, to keep her sane is repeated over and over, until the horrors slide from her vision.

She is alive. Finnick is dead. She killed him before he could suffer. It should have brought her comfort but it didn’t. She is numb, unable to process his death. She is already responsible for so many pointless deaths. All she can think about is Snow, and ending this, once and for all, before she loses anymore people.

Finally, her vision clears, and she expects to see a mountain of furs surrounding her. What she sees is a metal corridor. The hairs on the back of her neck stand up and Katniss springs to her feet. They’ve been found. Betrayed to the Capitol.

She reaches behind and finds she still has her bow and arrows. An arrow is notched in seconds, and Katniss looks around her like a caged animal. Does Snow mean to make a mockery of her death, in some last mini arena? Is Peeta already dead? A wordless cry escapes her lists. It can’t end like this.

But it should, a voice whispers in her head. This is how you were meant to die, alone, friendless, in the first Arena.
